The only problem was my platform of choice these days is a Linux x86 PC where as I had played on a PS2 during the early 2000s era of Final Fantasy XI. It makes a lot more content more accessible to you without needing to rely on others for EVERYTHING.It is allowed here and encouraged where it was not on the retail servers. For those not familiar, Final Fantasy XI is a game that is very heavy on co-operation and a lot of tasks require at least two players and often a lot more. Since the population is a bit smaller than it was then but still very respectable (1300 players during prime time) there are quite a few dual-boxers. There is no way to set them on the PlayStation3, for a few reasons.I recently wanted to give the Nasomi XI Private Server a try as I had played a lot of Final Fantasy XI when I was younger and was feeling a bit nostalgic. To fully experience Final Fantasy XI, you have three options, either get a PlayStation2 Phat, since they are the only ones that support HDDs, a early release of the PlayStation3 (CECHA/B/C/E) but beware, choosing to get one not only they are expensive, but a lot of maintenence has to be done in the long run, or get the Steam Copy, which i think the servers are still up and running till this day as we speak.

Now for the preceding models, any form of PlayStation2 Hardware was removed, thus the Backwards Compatibility with PlayStation2 along with it, later Sony bundled a few PlayStation2 Titles via Emulation, dubbed the PlayStation2 Classics without any for of optical disc support, the CFW uses this emulator to run any desired PlayStation2 Title, as long as is compatible, but this emulator wasn't designed to be compatible with any of the PlayStation2 Peripherals, so by running Final Fantasy XI on a Non-Backwards Compatible machine, you will not have support for either the SCE/Broadband Network Adaptor and the SONY IDE HDD, thus rendering the game usless, and Peripheral support cannot be ported from the Backwards Compatible Console, due to the Emulation Code and execution being different from each other. Now to run the a PlayStation2 Game on a PlayStation3 is not an issue these days, thanks to the efforts of the CFW and the developers, so running Final Fantasy XI isn't a major headache, now there lies a rule within running a PlayStation2 Title on a PlayStation3, by the official way only the early batches of the PlayStation3 Consoles (CECHA/B/C/E) can run PlayStation2 titles from the disc itself, this was achieved by having actual PlayStation2 Hardware inside, thus every functionality of the PlayStation2 was supported by the PlayStation3, this being the SCE Broadband Network Adaptor and the emulation on the SONY IDE HDD, which came bundled with Final Fantasy XI back in the day, and which the game requires it.
